Just 30 minutes from the city centre, the port of Fremantle buzzes. Home to trendy bars and cafes, bustling markets, food trucks, a lovely harbour and some great shopping, some holidaymakers base themselves here whereas others just go for the day. The Fremantle Prison Tour, WA Maritime Museum and Fremantle Arts Centre are all worth a visit.

If you fancy another day trip option or long weekend out of Perth, take a ferry to Rottnest Island where the locals go to swim at white sand beaches, snorkel in turquoise waters over shipwrecks and to do some fishing. Rotto, as it is known, is a car-free zone which adds to its relaxed feel. Hiring a bike is the best way to get around but watch out for the quokkas, the cute marsupials which were the inspiration for the island’s name.
